The pooja consists of five main steps: Sankalpa (intention), Kalasha Sthapana (installation of the pot), Satyanarayana Pooja (worship of the Lord), Satyanarayana Katha (recitation of the story) and Aarti (waving of the lamp).

Here are the detailed steps for each part:

Sankalpa

This is the first step where you declare your intention and purpose of performing the pooja. You need to sit facing east or north, on a mat or a cloth, with the materials arranged in front of you. You need to take some water in your right hand and sprinkle it on yourself, on the materials and on the floor. Then you need to take some akshata in your right hand and place it on your left palm. You need to recite the following sloka:

Shri Vishnu Shri Vishnu Shri Vishnu

Shri Govinda Govinda Govinda

Shri Madhusudhana Madhusudhana Madhusudhana

Shri Trivikrama Trivikrama Trivikrama

Shri Vamana Vamana Vamana

Shri Shridhara Shridhara Shridhara

Shri Hrishikesha Hrishikesha Hrishikesha

Shri Padmanabha Padmanabha Padmanabha

Shri Damodara Damodara Damodara

Shri Sankarshana Sankarshana Sankarshana

Shri Vasudeva Vasudeva Vasudeva

Shri Pradyumna Pradyumna Pradyumna

Shri Aniruddha Aniruddha Aniruddha

Shri Purushottama Purushottama Purushottama

Shri Adhokshaja Adhokshaja Adhokshaja

Shri Narasimha Narasimha Narasimha

Shri Achyuta Achyuta Achyuta

Shri Janardhana Janardhana Janardhana

Shri Upendra Upendra Upendra

Shri Hari Hari Hari

Shri Krishna Krishna Krishna

Mamopatta samasta duritakshaya dwara shri parameshwara preetyartham shri satyanarayanam bhagawanam poojam karishye

(Translation: By reciting the names of Lord Vishnu, I invoke his blessings. For the sake of pleasing Lord Parameshwara (the supreme Lord), I will perform the pooja of Lord Satyanarayana.)

After reciting this sloka, you need to drop the akshata on the floor.

Kalasha Sthapana

This is the second step where you install the kalash as a symbol of Lord Satyanarayana. You need to place the kalash on the plate with rice grains. You need to tie a thread around the neck of the kalash and insert a betel nut, a coin and some akshata into it. You need to cover the mouth of the kalash with mango leaves and place a coconut on top of it. You need to apply turmeric, kumkum and sandalwood paste on the coconut. You need to place some flowers and garlands around the kalash. You need to light the lamp and place it near the kalash. You need to recite the following sloka:

Kalashasya mukhe vishnuh kante rudrah samashritah

Mule tatra sthitah brahma madhye matruganah smritah

Kukshau tu sagarah sarve saptadvipah vasundhara

Rigvedo atha yajurvedah samavedo hyatharvanah

Angaishcha sahitah sarve kalashambu samashritah

Asmin bimbe mahadevah pujaniyo namostute

(Translation: On the mouth of this pot is Lord Vishnu, on its neck is Lord Rudra (Shiva), at its base is Lord Brahma, in its middle are all the goddesses. In its belly are all the oceans, seven continents and earth. The four Vedas are also present in it along with their limbs. All these are contained in this pot filled with water. On this image I worship Lord Mahadeva (the great God). I salute you.)

After reciting this sloka, you need to offer some flowers and akshata to the kalash.

Satyanarayana Pooja

This is

  • The fifth chapter also narrates how a king named Ulkamukha performed the pooja with his queen and children. He also invited a poor Brahmin named Sushila to join them. However, he did not give him any prasadam or respect. The Brahmin felt insulted and cursed the king to become a leper. The king realized his mistake and prayed to Lord Satyanarayana for help. The Lord appeared in his dream and told him to perform the pooja again with devotion and distribute the prasadam to everyone. The king did as instructed and regained his health and happiness.

After reciting each chapter, you need to offer some flowers and akshata to the Lord and chant the following sloka:

Shri Satyanarayanam bhagawanam katha shravanena samaptam

(Translation: I have completed listening to the story of Lord Satyanarayana.)

Aarti

This is the final step where you wave the lamp in front of the Lord and sing his praises. You need to light a camphor in a metal plate and hold it in your right hand. You need to wave it in a circular motion around the Lord's image, starting from his feet and moving up to his head. You need to recite the following sloka:

Om jay jagdish hare swami jay jagdish hare

Bhakt janon ke sankat kshan men door kare

Om jay jagdish hare

(Translation: O Lord of the universe, O Lord of the universe, you remove the troubles of your devotees in an instant. O Lord of the universe.)

You can also sing other hymns or songs in praise of Lord Satyanarayana. After completing the aarti, you need to offer some fruits and sweets to the Lord as naivedyam (food offering). You need to recite the following sloka:

Naivedyam grihan devesh narayan namostute

Annapurna mahalakshmi sarvopadrava shantaye

(Translation: O Lord of the gods, O Narayana, I offer you this food. O Annapurna (giver of food), O Mahalakshmi (goddess of wealth), please remove all obstacles.)

After offering the naivedyam, you need to distribute the prasadam (blessed food) to everyone present. You need to make sure that everyone gets a share of the Satyanarayana Prasadam, which is very important for completing the pooja. You need to recite the following sloka:

Prasada sweekaromi shri satyanarayanasya prasadat

Sarva papa vinirmukto bhavishyami cha sarvada

(Translation: I accept this prasadam from Lord Satyanarayana. By his grace, I will be free from all sins and always be happy.)

This concludes the Satyanarayana Pooja. You can now bow down to the Lord and thank him for his blessings.
